TOEFL Test Format Overview

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The test measures the ability to understand and use English at the university level and is commonly used for admission to English-speaking colleges and universities.

1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) Format:

The TOEFL iBT is administered entirely online and consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

Reading Section (60-80 minutes):

Format: 3-4 passages (700-800 words each) followed by multiple-choice questions.

Content: Academic texts from various disciplines (e.g., natural sciences, social sciences, humanities).

Tasks: Answer questions based on main ideas, supporting details, vocabulary, and inference.

Listening Section (60-90 minutes):

Format: 4-6 lectures (3-5 minutes each) and 2-3 conversations (3 minutes each) followed by multiple-choice questions.

Content: Academic lectures and conversations between students and instructors.

Tasks: Answer questions based on main ideas, details, speaker attitude, and purpose.

Speaking Section (20 minutes):

Format: 6 tasks (2 independent and 4 integrated).

Tasks: Express opinions on familiar topics, summarize lecture content, respond to reading and listening passages, and participate in conversations.

Response Length: 45-60 seconds for independent tasks and 60-90 seconds for integrated tasks.

Writing Section (50 minutes):

Format: 2 tasks (1 integrated and 1 independent).

Tasks: Summarize information from a reading passage and a lecture, express an opinion on a given topic, and support it with examples and reasons.

Response Length: Integrated task (150-225 words) and independent task (300 words).

2. TOEFL Paper-based Test (PBT) Format:

The TOEFL Paper-based Test is primarily offered in areas where the internet-based test is not available. It consists of three sections: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension.

Listening Comprehension (30-40 minutes): Listening to recorded lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations followed by multiple-choice questions.

Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes): Multiple-choice questions testing grammar and sentence structure.

Reading Comprehension (55 minutes): Reading passages followed by multiple-choice questions.

Scoring

Each section of the TOEFL iBT is scored separately, and scores range from 0 to 30. The total score is the sum of the scores from all four sections and ranges from 0 to 120. The TOEFL PBT has a different scoring scale, with a total score ranging from 310 to 677.
