The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based English language proficiency test designed to assess the language skills of non-native English speakers. The test evaluates speaking, writing, reading, and listening abilities.
The PTE Academic test consists of three main parts: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. The entire test is completed in a single sitting and typically lasts around 3 hours
a. Speaking and Writing (77-93 minutes):
Personal Introduction (not scored): You will be given 25 seconds to prepare and 30 seconds to record a brief introduction about yourself.
Read Aloud: You will read a text aloud from the screen. You have 30-40 seconds to prepare and 30-40 seconds to speak.
Repeat Sentence: You will hear a sentence. Your task is to repeat it as accurately as possible. Each sentence is only played once.
Describe Image: You will see an image or a graph. You have 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to describe the image.
Re-tell Lecture: You will listen to a lecture or a short talk. Afterward, you have 10 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to re-tell the lecture.
Answer Short Question: You will hear a question. Your task is to give a short and precise answer. Each question has a time limit of 10 seconds.
Summarize Written Text: You will read a passage and summarize it in one sentence. You have 10 minutes to complete this task.
Write Essay: You will write an essay in response to a prompt. You have 20 minutes to write the essay.
b. Reading (32-41 minutes):
Multiple Choice, Choose Single Answer: You will read a passage and answer a multiple-choice question.
Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers: You will read a passage and answer a multiple-choice question with more than one correct answer.
Re-order Paragraphs: You will be given a jumbled-up passage. Your task is to re-order the paragraphs to form a coherent passage.
Fill in the Blanks (Reading): You will read a passage with missing words. You must select the correct word from a dropdown list to fill in each blank.
c. Listening (45-57 minutes):
Summarize Spoken Text: You will listen to a lecture or a conversation. Your task is to summarize it in one sentence.
Multiple Choice, Choose Single Answer: You will listen to a recording and answer a multiple-choice question.
Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers: You will listen to a recording and answer a multiple-choice question with more than one correct answer.
Highlight Incorrect Words: You will listen to a recording of a sentence. Your task is to identify the words that are different from what is written on the screen.
Write from Dictation: You will hear a sentence. Your task is to type the sentence exactly as you hear it.
The PTE Academic test is scored on a scale of 10 to 90, with 10-point increments. Each section of the test (Speaking and Writing, Reading, Listening) receives a separate score. Scores are typically available within 5 business days after the test date.
