The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Life Skills A1 and B1 tests are designed to assess an individual’s ability to communicate effectively in English for everyday purposes. These tests are required for certain visa categories, including spouse/partner visas, settlement visas, and citizenship applications.
The UKVI Life Skills A1 test assesses your ability to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases in English. It focuses on simple, practical language skills needed for everyday social interactions and basic transactions.
Duration: Approximately 6-7 minutes per candidate (including administrative time).
Speaking and Listening: The test consists of a one-on-one interview with a trained examiner. You will be asked to answer questions and engage in conversations related to familiar topics, such as personal information, daily routines, interests, and preferences. The examiner will assess your ability to communicate effectively, understand simple instructions, and respond appropriately.
Topics: Common topics include introductions, family, work/study, hobbies, shopping, directions, and personal experiences.
The UKVI Life Skills B1 test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in more complex situations and handle a wider range of language functions. It focuses on practical language skills needed for social interactions, work-related contexts, and community participation.
Duration: Approximately 10 minutes per candidate (including administrative time).
Speaking and Listening: Similar to the A1 test, the B1 test consists of a one-on-one interview with a trained examiner. You will participate in discussions and role-plays related to a variety of topics, including work, education, leisure activities, travel, and social issues. The examiner will evaluate your ability to express opinions, give explanations, ask questions, and engage in meaningful interactions.
Topics: The range of topics is broader and may include work, education, travel, health, housing, relationships, and current events.
The UKVI Life Skills tests are not scored in the traditional sense. Instead, you will receive a pass or fail result based on your performance in the speaking and listening components. To pass the test, you must demonstrate that you can communicate effectively in English at the required level (A1 or B1) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
