The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test designed to assess the language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is widely recognized by universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional organizations around the world. The IELTS test is available in two versions: Academic and General Training. Below is an overview of the test format for both versions:
The IELTS Academic test is intended for individuals who plan to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels or seek professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
Listening (30 minutes): You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and answer a series of questions. The recordings include conversations, monologues, and academic lectures.
Reading (60 minutes): You will read three long texts taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. The texts are on academic subjects and may include diagrams, graphs, or illustrations. You’ll answer a variety of questions to test your comprehension skills.
Writing (60 minutes): You will complete two writing tasks. Task 1 requires you to describe visual information (e.g., graphs, charts, diagrams), while Task 2 involves writing an essay in response to a given prompt. Both tasks assess your ability to present and support ideas coherently and use appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
Speaking (11-14 minutes): A face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The speaking test is divided into three parts: an introduction and interview, a short speech on a given topic, and a discussion related to the topic.
The IELTS General Training test is suitable for individuals who plan to migrate to an English-speaking country, undertake non-academic training, or gain work experience.
Listening (30 minutes): Similar to the Academic version, this section consists of four recordings with a range of accents and topics. The questions assess your ability to understand main ideas, details, and opinions.
Reading (60 minutes): You will read passages of increasing complexity taken from notices, advertisements, company handbooks, newspapers, and fiction/non-fiction texts. Questions assess your ability to locate and understand information, identify opinions, attitudes, and purposes of the text.
Writing (60 minutes): Task 1 requires you to write a letter in response to a given situation or request. Task 2 involves writing an essay on a general topic. Both tasks assess your ability to communicate effectively in writing and organize ideas logically.
Speaking (11-14 minutes): The format is the same as the Academic version, with a face-to-face interview covering personal and familiar topics, a short speech, and a discussion.
IELTS scores are reported on a band scale from 0 to 9, with each band representing a level of English proficiency. Scores are rounded to the nearest half band. The overall band score is the average of the four individual component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
